What to Expect from an ADHD Assessment in Brisbane
By Courtney | Nourished Psychology, Stafford Brisbane
If you've been wondering whether you or your teenager might have ADHD, you're not alone. More and more women, mothers and adolescents in Brisbane are seeking clarity through a formal ADHD assessment — and for many, getting that diagnosis is the beginning of finally understanding themselves.
But if you've never been through the process before, it can feel uncertain and even a little daunting. What actually happens during an ADHD assessment? How long does it take? And what comes next?
Here's everything you need to know.
What Is an ADHD Assessment?
An ADHD assessment is a comprehensive evaluation carried out by a registered psychologist to determine whether you meet the criteria for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It looks at your history, your current symptoms, and how those symptoms are affecting your day-to-day life — at work, at school, in relationships, and at home.
A formal assessment is the only way to receive an official ADHD diagnosis in Australia. This diagnosis can then open the door to support strategies, workplace or school accommodations, and if appropriate, a referral to a psychiatrist for medication management.
Who Is an ADHD Assessment For?
ADHD assessments at Nourished Psychology are available for individuals aged 12 and above, including:
Teenagers and adolescents struggling with focus, school performance, emotional regulation or friendships
Adult women who have spent years feeling overwhelmed, disorganised or "too much," and are wondering if ADHD could explain why
Mothers who recognise ADHD traits in their children and are starting to see themselves in those descriptions
Anyone who has always felt different but has never had a clear explanation for why
It's worth noting that ADHD in women and girls is frequently missed or misdiagnosed. Many women reach adulthood — or even midlife — before receiving a diagnosis, having spent years being told they were anxious, scattered or not trying hard enough. If this resonates with you, an assessment could be a genuinely life-changing step.
What Does the ADHD Assessment Process Involve?
Every assessment at Nourished Psychology is thorough, compassionate and tailored to you. Here is what you can generally expect:
1. Initial Consultation
Before the formal assessment begins, we'll have an initial conversation about what's brought you in, your history and your current concerns. This helps to build a clear picture of your experience and ensures the assessment is relevant to your life.
2. Clinical Interview
This is an in-depth conversation covering your developmental history, childhood experiences, school and work history, relationships and current symptoms. For younger clients, a parent or caregiver may be involved in part of this process.
3. Questionnaires and Rating Scales
You'll be asked to complete a series of standardised questionnaires that measure attention, impulsivity, emotional regulation and executive functioning. In some cases a parent, partner or teacher may also be asked to complete a form to provide additional perspective.
4. Feedback and Reporting
Once all the information has been gathered and analysed, we'll meet to discuss the findings in detail. You'll receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment results, whether a diagnosis of ADHD has been made, and tailored recommendations for next steps.
How Long Does an ADHD Assessment Take?
A thorough ADHD assessment typically takes place across multiple appointments rather than a single session. This allows time for a complete and accurate picture to emerge rather than a rushed conclusion.
At Nourished Psychology we'll give you a clear outline of timing and what to expect at your first appointment.
What Happens After an ADHD Assessment?
Receiving an ADHD diagnosis — or having one ruled out — is not the end of the conversation. It's the beginning of one.
If ADHD is identified, your report and recommendations can be shared with your GP, school or employer to access appropriate support. If medication is something you'd like to explore, your GP can provide a referral to a psychiatrist using your assessment report.
Many clients also continue working with us after their assessment to develop practical strategies for managing attention, emotional regulation, relationships and daily life — whether or not medication is part of their journey.
How Much Does an ADHD Assessment Cost in Brisbane?
ADHD assessments are a specialised service and involve significant time both in session and in report preparation. At Nourished Psychology we are transparent about costs and will discuss all fees with you before your assessment begins.
Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Care Plan do not typically cover ADHD assessments, however some private health funds may offer a partial rebate. We recommend checking with your provider.
